Editorial responsibility

Who decides what is published

The editorial office checks a submission for scope and completeness. A manuscript that passes is assigned to a board member, who assesses it and invites reviewers with topical and, where the design calls for it, methodological expertise.

Each manuscript is assessed by at least two independent specialists. Open Access Pub provides the publishing platform and production, and takes no part in the assessment of a manuscript. Serving on the board confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member’s own work.

  • ConfidentialityManuscript content and reviewer identities are held in confidence at every stage.
  • Declared interestsInterests are declared before a manuscript is handled, and a conflicted editor recuses.
  • Right of appealAn author may appeal a decision in writing to the editorial office within 30 days.

What the journal asks of a handling editor and of a reviewer is published in the editor guidelines and reviewer guidelines; the decision process itself is set out in the editorial policies.
